Kraków supports independent bookshops in many ways. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the Municipality of Kraków and the KBF, operator of the UNESCO City of Literature programme, launched a short-term project “Immune Bookshops”.
Between 17 April and 30 June 2020, 22 selected bookshops received financial support during the difficult period for the industry. One of the results of the programme was the cycle “From Bookshelves”, including video reviews streamed on the Facebook page of the Kraków UNESCO City of Literature and book recommendations published in the “Karnet” monthly and on karnet.krakow.pl. Booksellers presented the most fascinating recent releases, available online or to buy at their stores. The project encouraged readers to express solidarity with their favourite bookshops and to reach for selected books.
