DESIGN IN KRAKOW
Community
(The project is part of the “Sztuka do Rzeczy – Design w Krakowie” initiative)
11-12 and 25-26 November 2023
Apteka Designu, Kopernika 19A
How to design well while supporting the local community? Are care and emotions important in building new spaces? How do concepts such as safety, social responsibility and recycling pertain to design, and is there a perfect way to bring abandoned neighbourhoods back to life?
Local and grassroots – these key words will be the focus of the first instalment of the interdisciplinary Design in Krakow project, during which experts and residents will meet at the Design Pharmacy to explore the new role of the designer in creating a safe, modern and participatory space.
Meetings with Design will be a weekend series of lectures and encounters with industry experts creating new projects, as well as focusing on revitalising neighbourhoods, buildings and creating an engaged COMMUNITY around them.
The events will be held on 11-12 November and 25-26 November and they are available free of charge, although tickets are required. The project is part of the city’s “Sztuka do Rzeczy – Design w Krakowie” initiative. The full programe can be found here.
All lectures and debates will be streamed on KBF’s YouTube channel.
What can you expect?
11 and 12 November
Community: Local
Locality is the totality of processes that support and build communities. The invited speakers will attempt to build awareness and understanding of the processes surrounding the creation, empathetic design and support of communities, which can contribute to more effective action for their development.
25 and 26 November
Community: Grassroots
The invited speakers will refer to phenomena that occur when the community or individuals take initiatives, make decisions and carry out projects that affect their local environment or area. The grassroots community emphasises people’s autonomy and self-reliance in making decisions, as well as their empowerment to shape their environment, rather than relying on decisions made by the authorities. This approach promotes democratic community participation and seeks to increase the impact of individuals on issues that directly affect them.

Social exchange of Design Books
15.00-18.00
—
Join us for the exchange of books revolving around design.
The event will take place at the Design Pharmacy – a new space on the map of Krakow, which heralds Wesoła’s transformation into a creative district. As a space where designers were given free reign, this former hospital pharmacy building is transformed before our eyes into a design centre, an open creative laboratory where architecture, web design, technology and industrial design meet social activism. Design in Krakow is intended to be a meeting space that brings together the Krakow community.
The book exchange will be an opportunity to meet, talk and get to know each other.
The rules are very simple:
- The exchange concerns publications (books, magazines) on design, crafts, graphic design, architecture, fashion, etc.
- Each person can bring a maximum of 10 publications.
- You can take as many publications as you brought with you.
- Any publications remaining after the exchange will end up in the Design Pharmacy Reading Room.
Admission to the event is free of charge. We look forward to seeing you in Wesoła!
The event is organised by the Ogniwo Cooperative.
