It’s difficult enough to publish a debut novel, never mind making sure it reaches wide audiences. The Conrad Prize, awarded every year as part of the Conrad Festival, supports up-and-coming authors. Winners gain brand-new readers and are invited to Kraków as part of the residential programme held by the Book Institute to work on their next project.
The distinctions also encourage publishing houses to take the risk of producing books by new authors. The Conrad Prize, awarded for the first time in 2015, forms a part of a municipal programme supporting debuting writers as part of the UNESCO City of Literature programme and is organised jointly by the City of Kraków, the KBF, the Tygodnik Powszechny Foundation and the Book Institute.
