Every year since the mid-1990s, on the second Sunday of January, the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity culminates its campaign raising funds for lifesaving medical equipment. Hundreds of volunteers take to the streets to collect money, shaking their distinctive tins bearing the campaign’s heart-shaped logo.
The finale, held all over Poland, includes events such as charity auctions, happenings, first-aid demonstrations and workshops, blood donation campaigns and concerts. Kraków is one of the major participants in the campaign, holding charity donations and auctions and the culmination of the finale: the traditional light to the heaven.
Cracovian events are organised by a team at the Gazeta Krakowska daily, the City of Kraków, the KBF and the National Museum in Kraków.
